A chilling sci-fi thriller short story where a routine murder investigation opens a dark corporate secret. What begins as a murder mystery quickly spirals into a psychological twist of identity, betrayal, and artificial reality. Perfect for fans of dark sci-fi, suspenseful short stories, and conspiracy thrillers.
The rain hit the pavement like nails on glass, relentless and cold. In the dim light of a fogged-up streetlamp, a man’s body lay sprawled across his apartment floor.
Inspector Steven Albert was called in just past midnight. The man was Ritwik Sinha, 38, an investment banker. Neat apartment, no signs of forced entry.
“He’s been stabbed,” said Officer Malik, lifting the sheet. “Once. Right in the heart. No struggle. Almost… precise.”
They checked the security footage. Footage is not recorded in the system before the time of death. Doors locked from the inside. Windows sealed. No trace of blood anywhere but the floor below the body.
The autopsy report added more puzzles. The blade pierced exactly between the fourth and fifth ribs. Surgical accuracy. But there was no blood spatter. Just a pool of blood collected slowly. Too slowly.
“The stab wasn’t the cause of death,” the autopsy examiner said. “He was already dead for hours. Embalmed.”
“Wait… embalmed?” Steven blinked. “Before being stabbed?”
“Forensics found preservation chemicals in the bloodstream. It was staged.”
So Ritwik Sinha was already dead before he was murdered. Which meant someone had killed him earlier, preserved the body… and then staged the murder. But why?
Steven returned to the apartment. Looked around. Everything was painfully ordinary, he noticed a framed photo on the shelf. Five men in suits. Smiling. Ritwik in the middle. A date scribbled on the back. All men worked together at a firm called Arken Holdings. Steven made the calls.
Three of the men were already dead. Everyone in a similar manner. All within the last 24 hours. Too perfect. Too natural. Too convenient. Only one man was left alive. Nirav Mehta. Steven drove to his home immediately. Nirav was calm. Too calm.
“You all were in that photo,” Steven said. “Now you're the last one breathing.”
"Inspector," he smiled, offering a drink. "Still trying to solve Ritwik's death?"
Steven replied, watching him closely. “I think Ritwik knew something. I think he discovered the deaths weren’t natural. That’s why he came here the night he died.”
Nirav’s face twitched. Silence. Then smiled faintly, "My time to die has come nearer than expected."
“…What?”
“Ritwik killed himself,” Nirav continued. “He stabbed himself, hoping someone would dig deep enough to expose the truth.”
Silence hung heavy until Steven whispered, “How do I know you're not lying?”
Nirav smirked.
“You don’t,” he said. “But check behind your left ear.”
Steven paused. His fingers reached up, trembling. There it was. A faint, perfect surgical scar.
His vision blurred. Flashes. Sirens. A car crash. Six months ago. Flatline. Time of death: 2:17 A.M. Then black. His heart raced as he looked at Nirav, stunned.
Nirav walked over to his desk, took out a folder, and tossed it toward Steven.
Inside: classified blueprints, and a torn page that read, in bold black font: "Protocol A: Project ReHabitat. Phase IV: Synthetic Transfer Successful (Test Subjects: N. Mehta, R. Sinha, R. Patel, L. Singh, C. Sharma, S. Albert)"
Steven’s hands trembled. “What is this?”
“We died last year in a company fire accident,” Nirav said. “Arken uploaded our minds into synthetic bodies. We weren’t supposed to remember.”
The memories drove the others to madness. Stroke. Seizure. The mind rejecting the lie. But Ritwik, he chose clarity.
Nirav leaned forward and whispered the final truth:
“You weren’t assigned to investigate us, Steven. You were programmed to terminate us, once we started remembering.
You killed them all."
