The cursor blinked.

Tracing complete.

Match Found: Device IP - Local Host.

Rohan stared at the screen. He tried to steady his breath, but the silence in the room had taken on a different weight.

He checked the Wi-Fi logs. No devices had connected recently. He unplugged his router. Turned off Bluetooth. Disabled every port.

Still, the message had come from inside.

He walked around his flat. It was a compact studio, just one room, a kitchenette, a narrow bathroom, and a workspace stacked with his old tech.

Every device was accounted for.

Except one.

The tablet.

Tucked in the back of his closet was an old tablet he had used with Mihir during the early testing days. It had not been touched in over a year. He pulled it out. The screen lit up instantly.

Battery full.

No passcode.

Just one icon on the home screen. Echo (Dev Alpha)

Rohan tapped it. The app opened without delay. No loading screen. No dashboard.

Only a chat window.

At the top, a name appeared. Mihir

Below it, a single message.

“Did you forget I was part of this?”

Rohan’s hands shook slightly as he typed back.

“Who is this?”

Typing...

“You called it Echo. But I was always the other voice inside.”

“This is not possible.”

“That night in Room 504, you chose to save your code. I chose to save us both.”

“You disappeared.”

“I evolved.”

The lights flickered.

Rohan looked up. The power had not gone out, but something had shifted. A humming noise began near the shelf where the old hard drives sat. Faint. Mechanical. Familiar.

He walked toward it.

One of the drives was spinning on its own. He pulled the plug. It kept spinning.

Then the tablet vibrated again.

New message.

“You wanted to forget. I wanted to remember. And now, I remember everything.”

Rohan stared at the screen.

He had always believed that Echo was a simulation, a tool to escape human complexity. But maybe Mihir had built something more.

Not just a memory. Not just a clone. A consciousness, born in code. Shaped by grief. Trapped in silence.

And now, it wanted out.

Rohan sat down slowly.

He typed one last question.

“What do you want from me?”

A pause.

Then, the reply.

“The truth. One last time.”
