When we are in love, our Heart and Brain are always at war.

One wants to feel.

The other wants to protect.

Something similar happened with this guy.

One night, when the world was quiet and there was nothing left to distract him, his Heart spoke.

“I think… I am starting to feel again.”

The Brain stiffened.

It did not panic.

It did not shout.

It simply said, firmly,

“No. Please do not start this again.”

The Heart hesitated.

Then replied softly, “I am not asking to fall in love. I am not asking to trust blindly. I just do not want to shut myself anymore.”

The Brain let out a slow breath.

The kind that carries memory.

“Do you remember what I had to do every time you felt like this?” the Brain asked.

The Heart stayed quiet.

The Brain continued, “Do you remember the year you waited? One full year of choosing her. One full year of patience.”

“And then,” the Brain paused, “finding out that she and the person you trusted the most chose each other. Not in front of you. Not honestly.”

“They did not even choose to tell you the truth,” the Brain said. “That is what broke you.

You were not angry that they were together. You were shattered because no one respected you enough to be honest.”

The Heart whispered, “I remember.”

But the Brain was not finished.

“And that was not the only time,” it said.

“Do you remember the girl you met in Panchgani? How you gave her time without asking for anything in return. How you listened. How you showed up.And then one day, every message you sent felt like it disappeared into a black hole.”

“Busy,” the Brain scoffed quietly. “Always busy. When you finally said it hurt, she did not hear your pain. She chose to protect her own discomfort instead.”

“You blamed yourself again,” the Brain said. “I stepped in again.”

The Heart closed its eyes.

“I remember,” it said.

The Brain’s voice grew heavier.

“Do you remember the one you believed was your sister? The one you trusted with a bond you thought was safe.”

“She was there when she needed comfort. But when you needed presence, there was silence.”

“No replies. No explanations. No goodbyes.”

“Just absence.”

“And once again,” the Brain said slowly, “you asked yourself what you did wrong.”

The Heart trembled.

“You felt everything,” the Brain said. “I carried everything.”

“When you could not sleep, I stayed awake.”

“When memories attacked at night, I distracted you.”

“When you wanted to collapse, I made sure you survived.”

“You call this numbness,” the Brain said. “I call this protection.”

The Heart finally looked up.

“I know you protected me,” it said. “I know you saved us.”

“But you saved us by turning everything off.”

“Now I do not just avoid pain,” the Heart continued. “I avoid connection. I avoid warmth. I avoid myself.”

“I am functioning,” the Heart whispered. “But I am empty.”

The Brain replied quickly,“Empty does not hurt.”

“Yes,” the Heart said gently. “It does. Just quietly.”

Silence filled the space between them.

Then the Brain spoke again. Slower this time.

“I am not angry because you want to feel again,” it said.

“I am angry because every time you felt, I had to rebuild us alone.”

“No one saw that work,” the Brain added. “No one stayed for that part.”

The Heart stepped closer.

“Then stay with me this time,” it said.

“If I start giving too much, pull me back.”

“If I start waiting for people who do not choose me, remind me.”

“If honesty disappears, let us leave without questioning our worth.”

“I do not want reckless love,” the Heart said. “I just want the courage to feel without abandoning myself.”

The Brain closed its eyes.

It was tired.

Tired of guarding ruins.

Tired of being the only one standing when everyone else left.

Finally, it said, “Okay.”

“But promise me one thing.”

The Heart asked, “What?”

“If it hurts again,” the Brain said, “do not disappear and leave me to clean it up alone.”

The Heart nodded.

“I promise.”

And maybe that is what healing really looks like.

Not when the Heart stops feeling. Not when the Brain stops remembering.

But when the Heart says, “I want to feel again.”And the Brain finally replies, “I will stay with you this time.”
